I spent many evenings in may smelling the dust or the grass, rocking out to whatever’s coming through my headphones, looking through a long piece of glass…. Baseball, soccer, lacrosse and softball seasons all came to an end, and we started covering most of the games after quarterfinals (in addition to the occasional regular season game earlier in the year).
Salt Lake City also hosted the Monster Energy AMA Supercross race in what is normally a football stadium. I can’t imagine how many truck loads of dirt were brought in for this one night. Pretty neat stuff to watch, though, particularly from a few feet away.
It started raining as the first race started, which apparently is a regular occurrence for this annual event. It ended up snowing pretty heavily before the night was over, and the track quickly turned in to a mud pile. Fortunately I had rain gear for myself and my cameras, so I wasn’t much worse for the wear. Can’t say the same for the bikers though…
It was a fun night, despite the weather. Takes me back to covering the Le Mans race in Connecticut, and there were umbrellas at that race too.
I covered a handful of field sports through the month, soccer being my favorite.
And finally the softball and baseball games. I never really got in to either sport as a thing to watch, and shooting them isn’t much better. There’s occasionally some good action or reaction, or some fun details. I find the spectacle surrounding softball and baseball more interesting than what’s happening on the field, and it usually makes for better pictures too. But, there’s nothing with quite as much american feeling as shooting on a diamond as the sun sets.
