through the old country

Although it’s not quite old, I feel like it’s where I came from. A couple weeks ago I flew out to NY for a visit with Sarah and some friends. No editor meetings, not shopping a book around–there’s another time for that. This was just a nice, little vacation. We went to some of the old haunts, avoided others, and generally had a great time reconnecting, strengthening. I brought a big camera, but spent most of the time shooting with a small one. It’s certainly a novelty to shoot polaroids with a cell phone, but it’s pretty damn fun too. And, I’m not burning through any expensive film on snapshots, so, you know, bonus.

My last month as a gainful employee (and photo intern) at the Deseret News is upon me, and I’m not entirely sure how that happened. Time seems to be playing tricks on me lately, everything feels so condensed and yet somehow stretched out. Plans are forming for a move to Washington, D.C. but nothing is firm yet. I’m hoping to wring a bit more life out of Utah before I go. I have thoroughly enjoyed my short stint here, and would even come back if the opportunity were right. Settling down in the state is a different matter, but I think a couple of years in Utah could be pretty damn fun.

So, there’s lots on my mind as my internship reaches its end and a new adventure awaits. And a good deal to do in that in-between time.

But in the mean time, here’s a polaroid-ish record of five days in NYC:
